Clavius Community Notes

2023 Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts
Meeting #61: 18 June to 1 July

At the invitation of the College of the Holy Cross and its Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, the Clavius group gathered at Holy Cross for its sixty-first session. We were provided with a lecture room in Swords Hall for our seminars and talks. Also, access to photocopying, printing services, and the internet was available. The group’s housing arrangements and other needs were generously attended to by Chip O’Connor, Director of Conference Services at Holy Cross. Members were housed in the Figge apartment complex, an excellent arrangement that made it possible for us to continue our vibrant community life. As is customary, each day was concluded by Mass and a community meal. The participants this summer consisted of four Jesuits, one Salvatorian sister, seven married couples, and four single lay persons. This includes two members who were unable to be present physically but participated virtually via Zoom. All in all, seventeen Clavius mathematicians took part along with several faculty members from Holy Cross and one other nearby college.

Community Activities 2023

June 19, Organizational business meeting at which details about meals and lecture times were decided upon.
June 21, Faith discussion: The challenges to religious minorities in India, led by Binoy Jacob.
June 26, Business meeting at which the future of Clavius was discussed. It was decided that 2023 would be the last in-person meeting. Subsequent meetings would be virtual, perhaps with some smaller groups being together physically.
June 27, Dinner at O’Connor’s restaurant. Celebration of 60 years of Clavius.
